That dedication and desire to give back lead Shirley to volunteer her optometry skills on a life-changing trip to Cambodia and Thailand in 2019 with the Restore One Charity. It was an experience that helped shape her resolve to make a difference in the lives of her patients.
Leading a team of 3rd year Melbourne University optometry students and other volunteers, Shirley provided visual screenings for 500 children in a rural school and village near the Cam Thom Province of Cambodia, and an independently-run orphanage in Thailand.
The team also taught the children English, built a decking and verandah, and cleaned and painted buildings – and through appropriate prescription spectacles, they were able to give the children their very own glasses to assist them with their lives, transforming their ability to read, write and learn.
